People often associate an itchy scalp with dandruff, but it isn’t always the cause behind it. There are several other conditions that could also leave you scratching your head. Getting rid of the itch starts with figuring out why your scalp itches. Following are the most common causes along with information on what can bring relief:
Seborrheic Dermatitis
Seborrheic Dermatitis is a severe form of dandruff. It is caused by an overreaction that the body has to normal yeast that lives on the skin. It is a common cause behind itchy scalp as it affects about 40% of people and tends to come and go during a person’s lifetime. While it can affect various parts of the body, when it affects the scalp, it is commonly called dandruff. The good news is, it is treatable. Generally, over-the-counter (OTC) medicated shampoos are enough to solve the problem. However, in stubborn cases, you may need to rely on prescribed steroid creams and shampoos.
Eczema
An itchy scallop can also be caused by an inflammatory skin condition. One such condition is Eczema. Also known as atopic dermatitis, it is fairly common in babies but it can also affect adults. The true cause is unknown. But according to one explanation, this condition arises when your immune system gets “angry” at your skin, leading to itchy, flaky, red patches. To cure eczema, dermatologists recommend coal tar, vitamin D analogues, topical steroids, excimer laser, and salicylic acid. It also helps to avoid stress whenever possible.
Psoriasis
Scalp Psoriasis can cause flaking and itching similar to dandruff. Psoriasis happens when the immune system triggers a lot of skin cells to grow on the different parts of the body, including the scalp. It is an inflammatory disease that causes reddish patches on the scalp and it is related to a person’s genetics. This means if anyone in your family member has psoriasis, you might also develop it. Another thing to note is that people with this disease are more likely to get dandruff but the disease itself is not dandruff. The first line of treatment for it are over-the-counter shampoos that contain salicylic acid or coal tar. If those don’t work, then it is recommended that you see your doctor for a stronger prescription.
Fungal Infection
A fungal infection can also cause an itchy scalp. Such infections are generally common in kids. Fungal infection that affects the scalp is also known as tinea capitis or ringworm. It can be caused by moisture that remains on the scalp for a long period of time. If you have such an infection, you will know about it soon enough as it will not respond to anything other than oral antifungals, that is something doctors usually prescribe as a cure.
An itchy and dry scalp is irritating, uncomfortable, and can often be a cause of embarrassment. Such skin irregularities on the scalp have both internal as well as external causes, such as the ones listed above. No matter the cause, you can take control. OTC treatments work well in most situations but in case they don’t work for you, it is recommended that you see your doctor.
